Steps 1 - 3

1. Locate Water Shutoff Valve

Locate the sprinkler supply line shut-off valve and turn it off.

2. Locate Backflow

Once you have located the backflow preventer, use a flathead screwdriver to turn the screw until it is parallel with the test cock valve. (The example shown illustrates a non-parallel position.)

3. Locate Drain

After completing steps 1 and 2, place a bucket under the drain and open it to clear out any remaining water. Note that your drain may be attached to the exterior backflow assembly.

Steps 4 - 6

4. Setting Backflow in Winter Position

Tools needed: Flathead screwdriver, channel locks

Action: Set all test cocks and ball valves to a 45-degree position.

5. Turn Off Control Unit

Now it is time to set your control unit to the off position.

6. Re-Close Drain

Once steps 1–5 are complete, follow these guidelines for your drain:

If you DO NOT have working backflow valves outside: Re-close the drain to prevent compressed air from blowing back into your basement.
If you DO have working backflow valves outside: Leave the drain open.

Note: If you close the drain, remember to re-open it once winterization is complete. If the drain continues to drip after 48 hours, your shut-off valve may be faulty and need inspection.
